Another side of Bob and more!

He got a sweet gift of gab, he got a harmonious tongue
He knows every song of love that ever has been sung
Good intentions can be evil
Both hands can be full of grease
You know that sometimes Satan comes as a man of peace

It was the night of November 17th, 2006. The musical, “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” a creation of Twyla Tharp and Bob Dylan, was due to run for only a couple more days, a victim of too many lukewarm or negative reviews in the merciless world of Broadway theater. I had seen the show, and enjoyed it immensely, but there was nothing to be done about it. I had a distinct sense of something historic (at least in terms of Bob Dylan’s career) on the verge of slipping away forever, down into the haze of memory alone. Bob Dylan’s name in lights on the Great White Way, in a show consisting exclusively of his songs and Twyla Tharp’s choreography: It was not something that would ever be seen again. Successful shows might get revived; this show — which due to its nature could only be staged by Twyla Tharp — would never exist again. Bob Dylan himself was enthusiastic about the production, calling it simply “the best presentation of my songs I have ever seen or heard on any stage.” But the moment had come and was now about to go; the curtain was falling and the times were changing in their inexorable way.

So it was that I made my way to West 47th Street in New York City, and set up my camera and tripod on a cold night in front of the Brooks Atkinson Theater. The show was actually going on, on the stage, in one of its final performances, as I took my pictures outside. I took many dozens of shots from a variety of angles, using a variety of exposures. I wanted to preserve the moment for myself: the Bob Dylan Broadway show that had been.

Two years later, the pictures are artifacts of a certain kind. This one, to my eyes, is the best of them.

The theater appears to radiate from within a dark void, right in the middle of busy midtown Manhattan. The marquee seems to hang in the sky. A woman hurries from the theater, and looks towards a taxicab which appears to be pulling away without her. A man is striding purposefully and obliviously past. The show goes on, but the show is destined to soon end. The times just keep changing.
