Dylan wins top Spanish art prize.

SPAIN’S 2007 Asturias Prize for Art has been awarded to the US singer and musician Bob Dylan, the jury in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo said today.

The prize-giving ceremony will take place in October.

“Austere in form and profound in message, Dylan marries music and poetry in a body of work that has set an example and influenced the sentimental education of millions of people,” the jury said.

Dylan, born in 1941 and originally named Robert Allen Zimmerman, is a “living legend of the history of popular music and the guiding star of a generation that dreamed of changing the world.” it said.

Bolding mine. The irony continues of Dylan being given credit for doing something he had no interest in doing. If you accept an award from people who are trying to hang labels on you at the same time as they are giving you the award, does that mean that you are accepting their labels? It’s a dilemma Dylan has confronted quite a few times in his career.

The actual award ceremony will take place this Autumn when Bob Dylan will be presented with his 50,000 Euro prize by the Crown Prince of Spain.

That’s about 66,000 dollars at current exchange rates. Time for a new custom made hat, I’d say.
