New on YouTube — from “rankflv,” the only truly indispensable contributor to that site — are some clips from the 1997 Kennedy Center Honors, wherein Bob Dylan was recognized. The clip you can play below (or click here to go directly to YouTube) features Shirley Caesar performing Gotta Serve Somebody. As highlighted in the book “Restless Pilgrim”, and as apparent to anyone watching, this was the moment of that night that an otherwise squirming Bob Dylan most clearly enjoyed. He pops up to give her a standing ovation at the finish.

In her preamble to the song, Shirley Caesar refers to Joshua, chapter 24, verse 15:

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
