His art’s in the highlands ...10:13 pm
The Scotsman is reporting that work has been progressing on translating Bob Dylan’s songs into Gaelic. As someone who attended school in Ireland as a child and teenager, and was compelled to learn the Irish form of Gaelic, I certainly would have appreciated this kind of resource back then. (Instead, alas, it was all about Peig.)
In any case, the Scotsman story says that these new Gaelic translations of Bob’s songs take considerable liberties, and we’re given to believe that this is going to annoy Dylan “purists” — whoever they may be. I really don’t think anyone is going to be all that annoyed, and I’d be surprised if Bob himself were anything other than amused and delighted. Just consider the liberties he himself takes with old folk and blues songs (or Civil War poems, or Japanese novels).
So good for Rody Gorman, and go n’eirigh an mbothar leat.
