Another side of Bob and more!

The tempest may howl and the loud thunder roar
And gathering storms may arise
But calm is my feeling, at rest is my soul
The tears are all wiped from my eyes

HELLO ...11:23 am

Theme Time Radio Hour

Bob Dylan’s “Theme Time Radio Hour” returned to XM Satellite Radio today, with a show organized around the theme of “Hello.”

Haphazard thumbnail:

(guitar instrumental of “What’s New” as background for intro)
Sherman Williams Orchestra — Hello
(comedian Richard Lewis comments on his dislike of “hello,” in preference for “goodbye.”)
Ricky Nelson — Hello Mary Lou
(Lord Buckley on “The Nazz”, i.e. Jesus, clip)
The Nazz (with Todd Rungren) — Hello It’s Me
(Bob reads some Emily Post, who says that saying “hello” is usually vulgar. Bob affirms that for his part he always says “How do you do?”)
Conway Twitty — Hello Darlin’
(Bob tells the grim love story of Abelard and Heloise)
Luke “Long Gone” Miles — Hello Josephine
Pee Wee King ( “the man who brought accordion into Western Swing”) — I Wanna Say Hello
(Deke Dickerson speaks on Pee Wee King)
Mardi Gras Loungers — Hello, Mello Baby
Buck Owens — Hello Trouble
(Bob talks about femme fatales, plays clip of Lana Turner from “The Postman Always Rings Twice”)
(Bob talks about Hawaiian music and its influences)

Radiolites — Hello, Aloha! How Are You?
(Bob takes an alleged phone call from “Rob Harrison” who asks question about where the word “Hello” came from. Bob obliges with multiple potential explanations. The caller requests “Hello I Love You” by the Doors, and Bob gives him the bum’s rush)
(Bob talks about John Wayne’s signature “Howdy Pilgrim” line)
Willie Nelson — Hello Walls
( “You know what one wall said to the other wall? ‘I’ll meet you at the corner.’”)
The Carter Family — Hello Stranger
Barbara Lewis — Hello Stranger
(Bob reads some Albert Camus, “poet of existentialist nothingness”)
John Prine — Hello In There
(Groucho Marx — Hello I Must Be Going, clip)
(After quoting Paul McCartney saying how the Beatles’ song “Hello, Goodbye” reflects the duality of everything in the universe, Bob reads the lyrics to the song aloud to see if he can figure it out.)

The Beatles — Hello, Goodbye
( “I always loved that crazy fade on that record.”)

Next week’s theme: YOUNG AND OLD
