Another side of Bob and more!

The cry of the peacock, flies buzzin' my head
Ceiling fan broken, there's a heat in my bed
Street band playing "Nearer My God To Thee"
We met at the station, where the mission bells ring
She said "I know what you're thinking but there ain't a thing
You can do about it, so let us just agree to agree."

YOUNG AND OLD ...2:02 pm

Theme Time Radio Hour

This week’s edition of “Theme Time Radio Hour with your host, Bob Dylan,” on XM Satellite Radio, was centered around the themes of youth and age.

My own thumbnail of the show:

( Bob begins by reading the entire “All the world’s a stage” speech from William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It,” all the way to “sans everything,” and remarks “As usual, Willie the Shake said everything you need to say …” )
Mose Allison — Young Man’s Blues
Oran Thaddeus “Hot Lips” Page — Small Fry

(Bob talks at some length about the writer of the previous song, Hoagy Carmichael, and about how he wrote his famous song Stardust. He quotes Hoagy saying:

“And then it happened–that queer sensation that this melody was bigger than me. Maybe I hadn’t written it at all. The recollection of how, when and where it all happened became vague as the lingering strains hung in the rafters of the studio. I wanted to shout back at it, ‘maybe I didn’t write you, but I found you.’”

Bob finishes by saying, “I know just what he meant.” )

Linda Lawson — Like Young
( Bob mentions that he saw trumpeter Jack Shelton playing the other night in Glendale, and “he sounded great.” )
The Ramones — I Don’t Wanna Grow Up
(Bob talks about the play “Peter Pan” )
( “Here’s an example how a great song is not a prisoner of time or place. Music travels through the air, so it knows no boundaries. It knows no borders.” )
Guy Lombardo — Enjoy Yourself (clip)
Prince Buster — Enjoy Yourself
Laura Lee — Separation Line
The Flying Burrito Brothers — Older Guys
(Marianne Faithfull talks about aging and being on the road)
Muddy Waters — Young Fashioned Ways
Jimmy Murphy — We Live A Long Time To Get Old
(Dylan reads a letter from “Claire Darwin” who asks a question about a bet that Stan Freberg won, involving a rickshaw, which he obligingly answers.)
Stan Freberg — Ol’ Man River (radio show clip)
Charlie Poole — Old and Only In The Way
Esther Phillips — Aged and Mellow (Bob speculates that Ben Webster is playing sax on this record)
(Bob talks about May/December romances, and how the Oval Office seems to attract them, and lists a bunch.)
Neil Young — Old Man
(Bob talks about birthday customs in various parts of the world)
Ray Barretto — Happy Birthday Everybody
( “Don’t forget: in three weeks, it’s our special Classic Rock show! We’ll see you next week on Theme Time Radio Hour, your home for youthful schemes, mature themes, and timeless dreams. See you later.” )

Next week’s theme: DAYS OF THE WEEK
