Just asking ...5:26 pm
So, Hugo Chavez is threatening war with Colombia. The man of the people, the workers’ friend, is sending soldiers and tanks to the border. He is apparently willing to sacrifice the lives of Venezuelan boys in the name of defending Colombian FARC terrorists. Golly. What would Sean Penn say? What would Harry Belafonte say? What would Cindy Sheehan say? Danny Glover — are you there? All good friends of Hugo Chavez and, as we know, great fans of peace and opponents of adventuristic wars (which can most easily be defined as any that the United States engages in). Well, I won’t be waiting for them to say much of anything, but I just felt like raising the question.
…
Speaking of the evil imperialistic and militaristic U.S.A., the pace of recent successes by U.S. forces against al-Qaeda, in Iraq and elsewhere, has been really remarkable. It’s not getting anything like the kind of focus in the mainstream media that it deserves, but one good place to read about all of it is at the Long War Journal, where Bill Roggio and Co. are staying on top of all the latest actions.
On a tangential note: In a few weeks, a major motion picture called “Stop Loss” will be released. It’s clearly enough another Hollywood attempt to spread cynicism and defeatism regarding what is going on in Iraq. None of these agenda-driven films of late have done too well at the box office, and, please God, this one will bomb big-time as well. What I’d like to know is: Where are the films telling the many stories of genuine heroism that have taken place in this war, from the Afghan front in late 2001 up to this very day? Making a film that sought to uplift spirits, and pay worthy tribute to authentic heroes of the kind that have been fighting and dying for the past 7 years, would not only be the right thing to do, but a well-made film of that nature would clean up at the box office. Doesn’t Hollywood even want to make money anymore? Or is it more important to spread the creed of “blame America first and always” than to make films that ordinary people would like to see?
Well, that there is what you call a rhetorical question, I guess.
