Many PBS stations in the U.S. are currently airing a film called “The Gospel Music of Johnny Cash.” I would agree with what the TV critic in the Daily News said about it: “The only problem with Saturday’s Ch. 21 special on the gospel music of Johnny Cash is that there isn’t enough of it.” It was actually released on DVD last year. It is narrated/hosted by none other than Dan Rather. Yet I enjoyed it so much that I will utterly resist making any remarks about the devil quoting scripture for his own purposes. In my locale, as I assume in others, the show is being aired as part of the fund raising drive for the local PBS station. So, it is interrupted every 10 minutes or so by the usual appeals for donations. (For only $100 you can get a 2-CD set of gospel songs by Johnny Cash.)

One of the more poignant moments was the footage of Johnny and June singing The Far Side Banks of Jordan to one another, in the open air on the banks of that self-same river in Israel. And I don’t know who could doubt that June was waiting for Johnny when he passed on in September of 2003, four months after she had crossed that river.
