A few days ago, in this space, it was said:

Since the news that Gibson scored the big interview with Sarah Palin, he is being mocked in lefty circles as some kind of softy and incompetent. Will he and his editors attempt to draw some blood and make some news?

It seems that the concerns — in particular of Mrs RWB — as expressed in that post were right on target. Governor Palin would have been better advised to do two or three live interviews, such as on the network morning shows, rather than giving ABC and Charles Gibson free rein to play the kinds of games being played and attempt to define her with a gaffe. In the first part of what will be a three-part interview, Gibson adapts a stern, cold-blooded tone that just isn’t his usual personality. It seems designed to rattle and intimidate Palin. It doesn’t work; she maintains her composure. Her answers are not as strong and masterful as one would like, but I don’t think she makes any terrible gaffes either.

The sooner she does some shorter live interviews, the better. Putting too much power to define her in the hands of one journalist or one media organization is playing with fire.
