So, tonight is the vice-presidential candidate debate between Governor Sarah Palin and Senator Joe Biden. RWB’s source in the Sarah Palin universe, Lone Pilgrim, says that a member of the governor’s staff in Alaska was called in to travel with her. While he hopes this contributes to her relaxing and being more herself, he also warns that she doesn’t need blind cheer-leading at this point, but rather some reasonably tough love in inspiring her to prepare for this debate. He’s hoping the McCain staff have given her some of that.

With all the focus on this debate right now, the reality is that in a couple of weeks it probably won’t be seen to matter much at all. McCain’s vice-president pick needed to do one major thing: fire up the base. Sarah Palin has done that. Many average conservatives who didn’t much care about helping McCain get elected have now thrown their lot in with this ticket, and will most assuredly be coming out to vote in November.

To win, with the way the economy is going and the way this issue is playing with swing voters, McCain will have to change the game in his favor somehow. Sarah Palin is very unlikely to do it no matter what her performance tonight. But lots of us will be watching on the edge of our seats in any case.
