Purple Haze ...5:42 pm
One week from today, on December 15th, the Iraqi people will turn out to vote freely for the third time this year. While the whole world was amazed and moved on the first occasion—back in January—it seems safe to predict that this time the major media will yawn and many people will find it easy to believe that nothing has happened. But it ain’t nothing. This is the Arab world, and the fact that free elections are being succesfully repeated one after the other is not a reason to shrug, but a reason to marvel. To wit, some people will be flaunting their purple fingers in solidarity with the people with Iraq, and a neat idea it is too.
For a feel of what’s going on in at least one part of Iraq in the lead-up to this election, Mohammed of the blog Iraq the Model is as always worth a read.
