Kenya seeks to upgrade airport for imminent state visit by President Obama ...4:55 pm

From the BBC:

Kenyan MPs have called for an airport in the west of the country to be upgraded for Air Force One in case Barack Obama wins the US elections.

[...]

The Illinois senator is a local hero in his father’s homeland, where a local beer has been named after him.

Mr Obama has never lived in Kenya and he has visited just three times.

The MPs from Nyanza Province said it was clear that Mr Obama was going to clinch the US presidency, the private Nairobi Star newspaper reported.

Mr Obama will face Republican John McCain in the 4 November elections.

Mr Obama’s father was from Alego-Kogello village which is 60km (37 miles) from Kisumu.

In other news, a female McCain supporter in New York City was physically attacked by a male Obama supporter. As a resident of NYC myself, I have to say that it doesn’t surprise me in the least. Knowing the kind of deranged Republican-hatred that runs rampant in this city, I think that it would demand no small amount of physical courage to go carry a McCain sign in broad daylight on the street. An amount which, by the way, I don’t possess: hence my choice to opine from the relative safety of this website.

Pity Joe the plumber (licensed or otherwise). He asked Obama a question, and Obama gave a bad answer, and now Joe’s every alleged imperfection is being dug into and blasted through the ether. This constitutes a tactical mistake, however, on the part of Obama, Biden, and their media allies, and McCain is absolutely right (both ethically and politically) to defend the man.

Apparently the gentleman owes some back taxes. Well, whoopie-do. As Rush Limbaugh observed on his show today, there’s someone else who has recently had some tax problems come to light: no less than Rep. Charles Rangel (D-New York). He is the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, meaning that he is in no small way responsible for taxing all Americans. And he has made no secret of his eagerness to get about his business in an ever more expansive manner — a manner in which he will doubtless be assisted by President-elect Obama. Rangel, it turns out, has failed to pay his due amount of taxes for years. This was revealed some time after it had already been revealed that Rangel was renting no less than four rent-stabilized apartments for himself. Rent stabilization is supposed to provide more affordable housing in New York for those who need it — it’s not supposed to enable a tax expanding congressman to expand his living space to such, well, expansive proportions. But one of the numerous stupid things about New York’s rent laws is that they don’t actually prohibit such behavior. They do, however, prohibit using one of the rent-stabilized apartments as a congressional office, so Charlie graciously decided to stop doing that at some convenient time.

It’s remarkable. The Democrat with such power over imposing taxes on regular Americans gets away with not paying his own taxes and also with exploiting rent regulations intended to help people who just need to keep a roof over their heads. A pretty ordinary guy whom we’re calling “Joe the plumber” asks President-elect Obama a simple question that gets picked up by the media (due to Obama’s awful and awfully revealing answer about redistribution of wealth) and he gets hung, drawn and quartered by everyone from Joe Biden to Jay Leno to the Associated Press.

It’s all just some kind of crazy snapshot of this very, er, interesting election.
