Groovin’ on a Sunday afternoon ...1:00 pm
As was mentioned in this space, Bob Dylan’s November 16th show in Kanata, Ontario was noteworthy for the fact that he included not just one but two songs from his “gospel era” in the set list — a rare occurrence for those who attend to this kind of thing. Recordings are now circulating of the show, so you can now hear I Believe In You (clip here – 9.6 MB) and Every Grain Of Sand (clip here – 12.1 MB). Both are great performances and great recordings, by the way.

The title of this post is not just a reference to the old pop song but is also inspired by the nature of these performances. Each one has a definite groove; this is soul music on multiple levels, to my ears. Listening to Every Grain Of Sand, it seems to me that Otis Redding wouldn’t feel out of place at the microphone with this arrangement and this backing. He could stretch out here with one of his big, burning ballad vocals, like Try A Little Tenderness. Bob Dylan is not Otis Redding, of-course, but his singing on these tunes ain’t half-bad either.
