It has been noted by a couple of readers that what Bob the DJ said in his “BLOOD”-themed radio show regarding Abraham, Isaac and the lamb is not scripturally accurate. As quoted here, Bob said:

When Abraham was supposed to have sacrificed his son Isaac, he tells his son that they were going to offer a lamb for sacrifice. After all, I don’t think Isaac would have gone with him otherwise. They bring a lamb on their journey, and when God spares Isaac, the lamb is sacrificed instead.

Well, that is quite different to the story in Genesis, Chapter 22. Here are verses 6 through 13 from the NASB:

Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together.

Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together.

Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.

So the significant differences with Bob’s rendering are (1) that the Bible says that they did not bring a lamb with them, and that (2) ultimately it was a ram that was sacrificed in Isaac’s stead, and not a lamb.

What’s up? Did Bob simply make a mistake? Was he rambling? Was he trying to make some kind of point? Or is he just playing with our minds?

Honestly, for my part, I have no bloody idea.

But this is a story with which Bob has some history, clearly.

Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”
God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin’ you better run”
Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”
God says, “Out on Highway 61.”
