More on President Bush and the troops ...8:09 am
Thanks to Greg in Michigan for the following story in response to the previous post:
Our local sheriff (I’m from a smaller community) often frequented the
business where I worked so I got to talk to him quite a bit. He was
friends with the family of a soldier who was wounded over in Iraq (and
eventually passed away from his injuries a few months later). He had
been wounded when his Humvee ran over an IED. For some reason he
hadn’t locked/bolted the door shut on the inside of the vehicle which
allowed all the men to escape and saved a few lives. Well, he was in
Walter Reed Memorial Hospital and President Bush was in visiting the
soldiers one day. As President Bush was nearing his room he began to
get upset and started telling his mother that he didn’t want to see
the President. When she asked him why, he said that he didn’t want to
see him because he was unable to properly stand and salute his
commander in chief. As President Bush began to attempt to enter the
room his mother went over and told him that her son didn’t want to
meet him and why. President Bush pushed her aside (not forcefully of
course) and went in to meet the soldier anyways. He spent over an
hour of his time in there privately talking with this one soldier.
His mother was saying that apparently President Bush got a bit behind
schedule because of this, but he knew this was more important. The thing that I most admire about Bush is that he doesn’t hold a
press conference every fifteen minutes trying to convince the American
public that he’s doing something right. He just does whats right. He
stands up for what he believes in and isn’t worried about trying to
appease the American public with fancy rhetoric and slick speeches.
That is what I call dignity and class.
