First Night ...8:51 am
Nothing too bizarre in Dylan’s first show of his new tour, apparently. Dylan remained on keyboard, and delivered a typically varied but not weird set list that included Tears of Rage, Never Gonna Be the Same Again, and Queen Jane Approximately. The encore-getter, as it has commonly been since the release of “Love and Theft” in 2001, was the rollicking Summer Days. These things are taken for granted by obsessive Dylan-watchers, but it’s worth noting how remarkable it is that a star of Dylan’s age, who has been performing for over 40 years, can comfortably rely on one of his most recent songs to get any given crowd up on their feet and cheering for more.

Addendum: Although, continuing the Sinatra comparisons from yesterday, it occurs to me that of-course Frank did the same thing, with New York, New York. He was 64 years old in 1979, when he recorded and released that song on his album Trilogy. It became a welcome replacement for My Way as the big closer.
