Our new president and his first week: an impressionistic miscellany ...6:15 pm
Dear George: Did we really give you such a hard time about overthrowing that dictator in Iraq? All is forgiven; please come back. The Vatican reacts to the issue addressed previously in this space here and here:
A senior Vatican official on Saturday attacked US President Barack Obama for “arrogance” for overturning a ban on state funding for family-planning groups that carry out or facilitate abortions overseas.
It is “the arrogance of someone who believes they are right, in signing a decree which will open the door to abortion and thus to the destruction of human life,” Archbishop Rino Fisichella was quoted as saying by the Corriere della Sera daily.
Fisichella is president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, one of a number of so-called pontifical academies which are formed by or under the direction of the Holy See.
“What is important is to know how to listen… without locking oneself into ideological visions with the arrogance of a person who, having the power, thinks they can decide on life and death,” he added.
[...]
“If this is one of the first acts of President Obama, with all due respect, it seems to me that the path towards disappointment will have been very short,” Fisichella said.
“I do not believe that those who voted for him took into consideration ethical themes, which were astutely left aside during the election debate. The majority of the American population does not take the same position as the president and his team,” he added.
Within that last paragraph, I think that Archbishop Fisichella proves himself to be a smarter and a better informed observer of U.S. politics than most, not only in Europe, but in the United States itself.

President Barack Obama reportedly told congressional Republicans during a meeting yesterday at the White House (to discuss what he describes as his stimulus plan) that they should not listen to the Rush Limbaugh radio program. Mr. Limbaugh, who is on the radio for three hours a day Monday through Friday but is off on weekends, responded today via e-mail to the writer Byron York at NRO:

To make the argument about me instead of his plan makes sense from his perspective. Obama’s plan would buy votes for the Democrat Party, in the same way FDR’s New Deal established majority power for 50 years of Democrat rule, and it would also simultaneously seriously damage any hope of future tax cuts. It would allow a majority of American voters to guarantee no taxes for themselves going forward. It would burden the private sector and put the public sector in permanent and firm control of the economy. Put simply, I believe his stimulus is aimed at re-establishing “eternal” power for the Democrat Party rather than stimulating the economy because anyone with a brain knows this is NOT how you stimulate the economy. If I can be made to serve as a distraction, then there is that much less time debating the merits of this TRILLION dollar debacle.

This one, although short, you’ll have to read in full at its source: It’s on President Obama, his inauguration, and the Edgar Allan Poe story it brought to the mind of the writer.
