In case anyone doesn’t already know it, until midnight tonight you can download a free mp3 of Bob Dylan’s Beyond Here Lies Nothin’ (from his forthcoming album Together Through Life) at BobDylan.com. It’s a 256 kbps mp3 file.

And it is groovy. The beat, the mix of accordion, a little bit of trumpet, the organ, the blues guitar: altogether it’s surely one of the most soulful sounds Dylan has ever achieved on record. He’s always inherently had a whole lot of soul, but I think this kind of groove doesn’t often come across on his albums. It’s easy to see why Dylan decided to make the most of what he was getting here, and extended a session intended for a single cut into the recording of a whole album. The promo mp3 does its job by whetting one’s appetite for more. It sounds like Bob is at his mischievous best and having a blast.
