Misunderestimated? ...11:35 am
RWB is praying that Hugh Hewitt is right.
President Bush has beaten the Dems like bongo drums for five plus years, and yet some conservatives are spooked by the fact that Harry Reid and Charles Schumer haven’t taken to the Senate floor to announce a attempt at a filibuster. Shouldn’t the presumption be –given the record of the past few election cycles– that the president knows what he is doing?
With the president wrapping up his press conference this morning, the overall message continues to be, basically, “Trust me.” That is a lot to ask on an issue of such centrality to so many who have worked so hard and been so patient, and have real fears that all of that work and patience is being thrown away. Maybe too much to ask.
Addendum: Also via Hugh Hewitt, a perspective from Thomas Lifson at the American Thinker.
Listen: other than reading reassuring remarks by others, and praying, it’s hard to know what to do. Anyone who thinks a revolt from the right will derail Miers’ nomination is dreaming. If such a thing were possible, how did we end up with Ginsburg and Breyer on the bench? And it was Arlen Specter, R- Pa, more than anyone, who made sure Bork got borked in 1987. And he’s now head of the Judiciary Committee. No nominee is going to be defeated on the basis of not being conservative enough.
It goes against the grain to place such faith in a man – i.e. Dubya – as is necessary for a social conservative to have at this moment to feel confident of the correctness of his pick. And yet, to think that he is throwing it all away goes against everything I’ve believed about him in terms of his understanding of the importance of the Federal judiciary, and his promotion of a culture of life. On those things he has been steadfast.
Until now?
So, is it “Don’t follow leaders, watch the parkin’ meters?”
Or “Gonna make you see just how loyal and true a man can be?”
We’ll find out; bye and bye.
