Tonight, in Strasbourg, France, Bob Dylan’s set list included both Masters Of War and John Brown. And it’s not the first time he’s played either of these tunes during his current tour. I don’t get it. Doesn’t he know that we’ve entered a new Age Of Light? No less an authority than Greil Marcus toured the country a few years ago, telling audiences how Dylan’s playing of Masters Of War in particular was always a dagger aimed at the heart of the Bush/Cheney killing machine. Well, Bush and Cheney have relinquished the reins of power and are gone (actually, Cheney is still popping up now and then, bless his heart). The new era of President Barack Obama has been in place for three full months now. Why are songs like Masters Of War and John Brown still relevant?

I guess we just have to hope that Greil will explain it all to us one day.
