The essential review of the new Star Trek movie is by Anthony Sacramone at Strange Herring. It’s one of those reviews that sums up the film so entirely and with such poignant eloquence that you no longer feel like you have to see the movie. (And this is all the more amazing, since the reviewer didn’t see it either.)

Should there be any outraged Trekkies reading here, let me just say: I’m 75% a Trekkie myself. I love the original series, I quite like “The Next Generation,” and I’ve enjoyed several of the big-screen versions. But this is a case where every cell in my body says: ENOUGH WITH THE REMAKES! Let Kirk be William Shatner and let Spock be Leonard Nimoy, forever without end. Another of my vain hopes, obviously.

If you haven’t seen it, and if you’re looking for an antidote to all the unbridled adulation associated with Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday, then read the remarkable piece at the Huffington Post by one Jesse Larner, on “Pete Seeger, ‘Folk Music’ and the Left.” I will say that I think he’s way too hard on the Kingston Trio and other musicians who are guilty of nothing other than making records.
