Via Clive Davis, this quote from Rod Dreher:

If Mel Gibson’s intent in “The Passion of the Christ” was to turn the Christian masses against the Jews, he plainly failed. In fact, the impression I got from the film was of the tragic circumstances that the Sanhedrin and Pontius Pilate found themselves in: both of them truly thought they were doing the right thing.

It’s an important point: Gibson’s anti-Semitism is going to remain an imponderable, to some degree, because no one can get inside his head. Who knows how many apologies remain to be issued, and how sincere they will be? That’s Mel’s problem, really. A larger question, for a lot of people, is whether his film, “The Passion of the Christ,” is in fact anti-Jewish, in its substance. Does his recent scandal really decide the issue, as many are stating?

Dreher goes on to say:

Gibson made those old Sunday school stories come alive again. He made those exhausted narratives bleed fresh. He created a work of art.

Will the art survive the artist in this case?

Addendum: I blame the booze for this post. I don’t know about quitting that, but I’m definitely going to swear off Mel for a while.
