At Dreamtime, to honor the fortieth anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, Fred Bals looks back at all the instances in which Bob Dylan has expressed his vehement opposition to space exploration (at least by humans): Touching the Moon. Fred strings it all together very well, and there’s no question this is one of the stranger bees in Bob’s bonnet. But I just have to disagree with Mr. Dylan in this instance: I think exploration is a noble impulse of the human creature, and it should not be stifled. I don’t see the financing of space exploration as an either/or game, where if we didn’t spend money on a space program it would instead go to some cause that everyone accepts is a worthy one; that’s not how government works. I don’t see that all problems on planet Earth need to be worked out before astronauts venture away from it; as someone else has observed recently, in following that logic we would never have left our caves. I’m with the moon astronauts and, as it happens, the majority of the American people in saying we should definitely shoot for Mars. I think that our imaginations yearn for it, our spirits need it, and (not least of all) it would make the best reality TV there has ever been.

Recently uploaded to YouTube is a latter-day studio recording, by Bob Dylan, of his song The Ballad of Hollis Brown. It’s described as being from 2002, but I think it’s likely the one described in a piece at this link, recorded in 1993 with Mike Seeger on banjo. In any case, it’s a good version, and worth a listen.
