It stinks. I’m never one for conspiracy theories, but when it comes to a brutal, murderous dictatorial regime like that of Syria, it seems only reasonable to believe that nothing should be taken at face value. Regarding this attack on the American embassy in Damascus — we are asked to believe that Syrian forces got there in the nick of time to bravely battle the terrorists and foil the plot, and this is supposed to convince us that Syria is also fighting the war against terrorism. Even if the official Syrian story is true, the idea that this regime is fighting terrorism is beyond nuts. But consider a different possibility: that the Syrian secret police set up a group of terrorists, saying “We’ll give you the green light to hit the U.S. embassy. We want to teach the infidels a lesson.” Then, they double-crossed them and had the security forces intercept them there at just the right moment, allowing the attack to begin but preventing its conclusion. Three attackers killed, and one captured. Now we’re told that the fourth terrorist has died from wounds he received — before he could be interrogated.

Any attempt by the Assad regime to use this incident to burnish its terror-fighting credentials ought to be laughed out of court. However, given the world that we live in, where far more absurd and obvious lies manage to gather adherents every day, that would seem overly optimistic.
