Detroit Tigers: 6; New York Yankees: 0 ...10:57 am
The best of five series now stands at two games to one, in favor of Detroit, after 41 year-old pitcher Kenny Rogers shut down the vaunted New York Yankees’ bats. Pitchers with talent, heart and guts can always prevail against super-slugger line-ups, and Rogers had all three in spades last night, pitching to vindicate a career scarred by post-season failure and particularly bad New York memories. Meanwhile, Randy Johnson, pitching for the Yankees, gave up 5 earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, in the kind of performance that would (somewhat bizarrely) have been considered adequate in front of this line-up during the regular season. That was 5 runs too many in a game where the opposing side wasn’t pitching with the premise of: “It’s OK to allow a few runs because we’ll get them back later.” But I should leave it there before I ignite too much controversy. Suffice it to say, Bob Dylan’s 2006 baseball pick, the Detroit Tigers, could advance to the next round by beating the New York Yankees later today. If the Yankees win today instead, it will come down to a deciding game five tomorrow.
