The twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is an appropriate time to remember a truly transformational president. The excerpted speech below, via YouTube, was one Ronald Reagan made in 1964 in support of the presidential campaign of Barry Goldwater (Bob Dylan’s “favorite politician,” circa 1961, according to Chronicles: Volume One). Goldwater was defeated by Lyndon Johnson, but Ronald Reagan had become a new political star, and the principles he outlined in this speech are the same ones, asserted with confidence and translated into action, which brought down that wall and so many others.
