Shana tunnels her way to heroism.

Shana, a 160-pound dog, was honored Thursday for “thinking on her paws.”

The German shepherd-timberwolf mix sprang into action and rescued her elderly owners, Eve and Norman Fertig of Alden, during the height of the surprise October snowstorm.

Shana dug a tunnel under a massive tree that had trapped the couple outside their home. Eve Fertig, who weighs about 86 pounds, laid on top of Shana, her husband leaned on the dog and they all made it back to safety.

Thursday, the 7-year-old dog was given the Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment’s Hero’s Award for bravery, a plaque that describes her heroics.

Well, stories about dogs saving people’s lives are always heartwarming to me, and I’m already looking forward to seeing the re-enactment on that TV show “Miracle Pets.” I do wonder: Did Shana weigh 160-pounds before the rescue, or is it all the pampering she has received since the event that has blown her up into a canine Michelin-man? It also begs the question as to Shana’s real motivation for doing all that digging. Was it dinner time?
