Odds and Ends ...8:11 pm
This story from ABC on the comeback of vinyl albums mentions Bob Dylan but completely misses the question of audio quality as related to the abuse of the dynamic range compression process on CDs, which, if you ask me, has plenty to do with the increasing sales of vinyl, even for people who may not realize just why the vinyl sounds better. I’ve been a little to the rear of the eight-ball on this, but I understand that Bob Dylan will be appearing on a TV show called “The People Speak,” which will air — or at least the first episode will air — this coming Sunday in the U.S. on the History Channel. (Here’s a preview at Big Hollywood which gets into the man behind it, Howard Zinn.) I’ve been burned before reacting to things concerning Dylan that turned out to be nothing like what they first appeared to be, so I’m not going to comment at this point. I’ll look at whatever Bob does on the show on its own merits — assuming I do see it on Sunday. (But I’ll admit I’m rooting for Hark the Herald Angels Sing.)

I’m going to be on the road over the next several days, or nearly a week, so I don’t know exactly if and when I’ll be posting, although I’m almost finished with my “formal” response to Christmas in the Heart, and would hope to post that during this time. The world holds its breath, I know. By the way, check out the brief but interesting evaluation from Eyolf Østrem (of Dylan Chords fame) at his blog Things Twice.

And a happy Chanukah to all those celebrating this weekend.
