Fading fidelity ...9:48 am
Just as a point of comparison to “The Times They Are A-Changin’”, another Broadway musical bites the dust — the one based on Nick Hornby’s story, “High Fidelity.”
The musical – which began previews on Nov. 20 – will have played 18 preview performances and 14 regular performances when it winds up its run Sunday night at the Imperial Theatre.
Still, as open-and-shut cases go, “High Fidelity” is far from the only show with a short shelf life. “The Blonde in the Thunderbird,” Suzanne Somers’ life story/informercial, ran for eight days (July 17-24) last year. “Bobbi Boland,” Farrah Fawcett’s Broadway debut, closed before it even opened, during previews in November 2003.
And nothing has yet to top “Moose Murders” – the climax of which featured a man in a moose suit getting kicked in the groin. That opened and closed on the same night – Feb. 22, 1983.
Tharp’s and Dylan’s “The Times” had 28 regular performances, preceded by 35 previews, before it closed. Almost sounds like a screaming success compared to some of the above. Of-course, they do say it lost its entire investment, so there’s the rub.
