There had been an air of inevitability about the Islamists taking over Somalia, and it’s worth savoring their quick routing by the Ethiopians (with some assistance from the Somalian government). It also looks to be a model for future actions, worldwide. The Ethiopian military had been receiving U.S. training and equipment. It also seems beyond doubt — although it hasn’t been publicly discussed — that they were receiving intelligence gathered from American UAVs and electronic intercepts. And their quick sweep of the Islamists’ strongholds has now provided targets of opportunity for the U.S. forces nearby. All of this happened, from the U.S. point-of-view at least, without a lot of fanfare, hand-wringing or angst. Of-course, some are predictably eager to get all that stuff started today: EU criticises alleged US airstrike in southern Somalia.

Addendum 1:02 pm: Pajamas Media goes as far as to report that U.S. helicopter gunships, with the American markings removed, have been fighting alongside the Ethiopians since hostilities began on December 25th.
