It can’t be long now before Manhattan — once before covered in hundreds of feet of ice — again becomes a ghostly, frozen tomb. Skycrapers will point brittley towards the sky like monstrous stalagmites. Lady Liberty will be restrained beneath an irresistible blanket of snow.

Yesterday, March 6th, 2007, was the coldest March 6th ever recorded in parts of the New York City area. When will our politicians start taking action, instead of just taking orders from the refrigeration lobby? Decades of the irresponsible overuse of freezers, air conditioners and dry ice has clearly led to this catastrophic turn of events.

Above is a picture taken by yours truly on the Brooklyn Bridge during a snow storm a few years ago. Imagine the same scene occurring regularly in August, and you will begin to have some idea of what may await us, unless we can find the will to put the brakes on this global cooling juggernaut.

Just think: if everyone just turned their thermostat up by five or six degrees — and left their windows open — some scientists say that we could slow the projected global dip in temperature over the next 50 years to 2 degrees instead of 4. But perhaps this is too much to ask of a society seemingly addicted to cool air on demand, and headed downward in a death spiral that can only end in a century or so with a few frosty words of regret, shaped by the frigid blue lips of the last equatorial hold-outs.
