SECOND ANNUAL COUNTDOWN SHOW ...11:31 am

Theme Time Radio Hour with your host Bob Dylan

In addition to another raft of great records, more motley and sage advice, and countless well-timed gags, this week’s episode of Bob Dylan’s “Theme Time Radio Hour” on XM Satellite Radio was notable for Bob’s pointed tribute to Charlton Heston. See below. (… continue reading …)

Colorado ...10:32 am

Another anti-Christian massacre in the U.S.A., stopped early in this case by a heroine who demonstrated just why a firearm is such a great equalizer. The killer was much bigger than her, and armed with an assault rifle and two handguns, but she took him down with her pistol and her steady hand. I suspect the aftermath of all of this is going to be a lot tougher for her than the act itself. Here’s hoping she gets through it.

Addendum: Actually it is now reported that the killer shot himself, after being shot several times by the courageous Jeanne Assam.

When That Ship Comes In ...2:33 pm

From the eleventh chapter of Isaiah:

There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
[...]
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear,
but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.
[...]
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
[...]
They shall not hurt or destroy
in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea.

The earth itself shall be full of the knowledge of God. The very animals will refrain from preying on one another, and eat vegetation instead. As a vision of a world set completely right, with true justice being delivered to the meek, the poor and the wicked, I would guess it is hard to beat these verses from Isaiah.

It’s a vision that you could say is echoed in Bob Dylan’s song When The Ship Comes In. Nature itself becomes one with the bringers of justice that the ship is carrying, as “the sun will respect every face on the deck,” “the seagulls will be smiling,” and the very “rocks on the sand will proudly stand.”

Joan Baez has famously (and in my opinion mean-spiritedly) attributed this song of Dylan’s to his annoyance at a hotel clerk. I don’t know that the record shows who may have similarly aggravated Isaiah.

It’s not a song that Dylan has sung live on very many occasions, if I’m not mistaken (the old Dylantree database that allowed instantaneous searching of past performances is sadly defunct).*

One occasion on which he did sing it was certainly a doozy, and that was at the culmination of the Live Aid concert in 1985 (previously written about at this link). This clip includes the remarks he made after singing The Ballad of Hollis Brown, i.e. those consternation-causing remarks about putting some of the Live Aid money towards paying off the bank debts of small American farmers .

*Addendum: Thanks to John R. for the e-mail regarding His Bobness Info: The Bob Dylan Database. My ignorance knows no bounds. However, a search in that database at least backs up my assertion. According to the records there, Dylan has only publicly performed When The Ship Comes In on four occasions: twice in 1963, once in 1964, and once on that July night in 1985 when the whole wide world was watching.

It’s amazing when you think about it, that an artist could have a song like that in his repertoire and only sing it four times in the past forty-four years. It also illustrates to what extent he reached back and very deliberately picked his material for that Live Aid appearance.

A visit to Chemnitz ...10:14 pm

Many thanks to Heinrich, who manages to pick up this broadcast all the way from Germany, and who kindly sent some of his own personal impressions of the “Drawn Blank Series” exhibition of Bob Dylan’s artwork in the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.

Maybe I should begin with some comments on Chemnitz. It’s not too big a city, nor a too fair one. In fact, it’s mostly downright ugly, like many of the eastern German cities, which all suffered from 40 years of socialism. Chemnitz (which btw. was called `Karl-Marx-Stadt’ == `Karl-Marx-city’ during socialism, for no apparent reason) does have a technical university, but I don’t know of any influential mathematicians there, and I wouldn’t like to study there myself. But anyway, the `Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz’ have Bob Dylan, so that cheers everything up. And the staff there wasn’t even as provincial as I expected. Entering there, one may take a couple of flyers, pays a price of a couple of euros (I think I paid 4 EUR, that was special price for students), gets up some stairs and enters the exhibition. Before that, there’s the possibility to get `audio guides’, i.e. portable devices with headphones that can play back some comments on some of the pictures. These comments (entirely in German, thankfully) are the least enjoyable part of the whole thing. For instance, there’s one picture (or rather, one set of pictures, since there are several versions of each) with the the Statue of Liberty and a guy turning the back to it. The plate in the statue’s hand reads `Rape is not Sex’, if I remember correctly. The audio guide tells the story that Dylan saw this scene at some amusement park, where on the plate in the hands of the park’s imitation of the Statue of Liberty someone had put a newspaper with the head line being just that, `Rape is not Sex’. Still, the audio comment goes on explaining how Dylan hereby criticizes the American way of living, capitalism and the difference between the rich and the poor. Well, maybe the comment wasn’t that far-fetching, but the tenor was there.

Another picture, titled `Casandra’, displayed the face and chest of a woman, her breasts visible, and the audio comment dived into a long rambling ending in a comparison with pictures of Virgin Mary. Now while it’s obviously true that Dylan has often connected his love/search for God with his love and search for women, or a woman (the wonderful Precious Angel, or various songs on Time Out of Mind), here the audio comment just got into plain nonsense.

About the pictures themselves I can’t say too much. I am not learned in modern art, and for some pictures I even thought the original black and white version (each picture had a small image of the original at it’s label) looks more pleasing to the eye. Still, the differences Dylan painted over that were interesting: In one case, what had been a woman sitting in the corner of a room became a young, a middle-aged and an old man, in the three versions of the picture. The two sisters with the ring on one version and none on the other you already heard about. Several of the pictures have the beholder look through windows or open doors, which gives a feeling of restlessness. Also, to me the women in the pictures seemed to have the tendency to be a bit plump, if that is the right term. Especially the backsides of some of the women seemed to be a bit bigger than our magazines have women these days. But that may be my pure imagination.

They also had a Bob Dylan discography, a panel of about 4 times 4 meter, which listed most of Dylan’s albums and songs from Bob Dylan to Modern Times, even the Best Of albums and such. However, they didn’t include Shot of Love. What a pity, my fiancée asked me where Every Grain of Sand is on, one of the few Dylan songs she admits to like. However, I couldn’t show her (except of course Bootleg series 1-3), since they omitted that record. I’ve put that into their guestbook, and I also told the lady at the counter, but she didn’t seemed to be too interested. I guess they can’t change that now anyway.

So there you go! I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising that the audio guide, provided by those old reliable “experts,” might include some dubious opinionizing. The story of Dylan’s career (or one story at least) is that of great work burdened by poor commentary. The good news is that the greatness of the work outlives the poorness of the commentary. Not that I have a particular opinion as to how great Dylan’s paintings may be. Obviously there are quite a lot of people who are enjoying seeing them, and I suspect you can’t say much better than that when it comes to the art of painting, these days.

I should note that Heinrich, who kindly e-mailed, has been associated with the incredibly impressive Dylan Chords work (guitar tabs for Dylan’s songs by Eyolf Østrem) and in particular is responsible for the SEAL project.

He also informed me that — based on information given on Michael Gray’s blog — it is possible to order the color catalog associated with the exhibition, which is said to be quite beautiful. If you search for it at this German site you’ll find it, for 49.95 Euros, plus shipping. But I can’t swear whether they will ship it to the U.S. or not, because I haven’t tried to order it. The exhibition is said to be coming to New York next year, so I figure I can wait. In any case, the world being what it is, there are probably other ways of buying the catalog, or else there soon will be.

Bidding has begun ...10:15 am

From Uncut magazine, the story of the auction of N.Y.C. Blues:

The handwritten lyrics of an unknown Bob Dylan song have come to light and are being offered at auction.

The song, titled ”NYC Blues”, was written by Dylan in 1961 shortly after he arrived in Greenwich Village.

[...]

The lyric, written in pencil on lined paper, was left by Dylan at the East 28th Street apartment of Mac and Eve McKenzie, with whom he stayed when he first arrived in New York.

[...]

The full lyric is divided into six lines of uneven length and reads:

You ever been walking down the streets in NY town
Walking down east fourth St,
Call for the Mayor to fix the trouble there, mayor’ll say there ain’t no
trouble, it’s all down in Wash-S
Standing on the corner of Broadway an’ 49th seen so many people I never saw in my life
I went to sleep at nite clean as I could be when I awoke in the morning
dirt all over me
Now I don’t mind dirt cause there’s dirt on the land but did you ever see
dirty - that’s one thing I can’t stand

A seventh line begins “I…” and then stops, indicating that Dylan was dissatisfied with the lyric and at this point abandoned the song.

I sure hope none of my unfinished lyrics ever surface.

The auction is at this link and bidding stands at $3,723 as of this second.

More blank ...2:49 pm

The Wall Street Journal Online has an interesting article by Ed Ward on the “Drawn Blank Series” in Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz, Germany; i.e. the exhibition of Bob Dylan’s paintings. It’s one of the more enlightening write-ups I’ve seen on the exhibition. (Thanks to Carol for the tip.)

The museum has certainly given Mr. Dylan’s daubs an imposing overture. The first gallery before one reaches the “Drawn Blank” show is a round room with several of Georg Baselitz’s huge oils and one imposing sculpture. But it becomes clear in the next room that Mr. Dylan is no mere Sunday painter, either. One of the first works one sees is “Two Sisters,” a nicely ambiguous picture of two women on a bed, one clothed, her gaze outwards, and the other clad only in a brassiere, regarding her. In this first of two versions, both women appear happy; the clothed woman sports a wedding ring. Her sister seems to be whispering some joke to her. In the second one, the situation is less well-defined, with the clothed woman seemingly in despair and her sister consoling her.

I’ll drink to that ...9:20 pm

As has been widely reported, Bob Dylan and his touring band recorded a new version of A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall, specially for a forthcoming event in Spain called the Expo Zaragoza 2008, which is highlighting the problems many people in the world have obtaining access to clean water.

An mp3 file of the tune can be found on a website associated with the Expo at this link (click on “Descargar mp3″.) It’s a very slinky version of the tune indeed, and I like it quite a lot.

Go to this link if you want to watch various promotional videos for the Expo which incorporate the new recording. There are some annoying qualities to the video clips, if you ask me, but there is some footage included of Bob and his band in the studio recording the song. Dylan has contributed a voice-over as well, saying simply, “This is Bob Dylan and I’m proud to be part of the mission to make water safe and clean for every human being in this world.”

Doing penance for his Cadillac commercials? Well, I don’t know. One thing’s for sure: you need water to make Cadillacs. Those GM workers get mighty thirsty.

Water’s a big issue in many places, no question about it. And not least in the Middle East.

Dylanology, new, from Hugh ...3:07 pm

An occasional reader and correspondent, one Hugh McDonald, has published some of his own reflections related to Bob Dylan on his website at this link. His page includes some interesting thoughts on poetry, and a fascinating and lengthy consideration of some possible roots and themes of Dylan’s song Shelter from the Storm, and many other things besides that I think are quite different from the usual run-of-the-mill Dylan criticism (and I don’t say this only because he says some nice things about this website). Check it out.

When the night ...2:39 pm

Anyone who attended a church this morning which follows the most commonly used lectionary would I think have heard this from Paul’s letter to the Romans:

And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed.

The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

And the Gospel reading would have been from the twenty-fourth chapter of Matthew, and included:

But of that day and hour knoweth no one, not even the angels of heaven, neither the Son, but the Father only.

And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the coming of the Son of man.

So, it seems like that would all make it a good day to listen to When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky, huh? It’s not a song that has commonly appeared in Bob Dylan’s set lists, but he did it during his tours with Tom Petty and Heartbreakers in the 80s, including this spirited version at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California on August 5th, 1986.

Well, I’ve walked two hundred miles, now look me over,
It’s the end of the chase and the moon is high.
It won’t matter who loves who,
You’ll love me or I’ll love you
When the night comes falling from the sky.
