No, Virginia ...10:58 pm
… there is no Santa Claus.
Virginia is called for Obama by Fox News. There’s less and less to say at this point in the evening. The bright spot right now is that — should God grant us another day — the sun will come up tomorrow and we’ll have a chance to do better in a variety of ways.
This thing may not be officially over, but a day of fighting a cold with pills and hot toddies means an end to my blogging at this point. Thanks to those who’ve read and who’ve emailed.

Called for Obama by Fox News. The biggest call of the night so far.

For Obama: makes it more difficult still for McCain.

McCain says “whoa” on PA ...8:45 pm
It does seem quite strange that PA is called this early. Hope for change is not lost.

Fox calls PA for Obama ...8:34 pm
First truly significant result, if we assume it holds. McCain felt he had to win in Pennsylvania, as shown by the resources and time he put into it. 270 electoral votes is now a big hill to climb for McCain, although not yet impossible.

New Hampshire for Obama ...8:15 pm
Not a good thing.
Yet, still no crucial states announced, unless you count ABC calling PA for Obama: hopefully they will have egg on their face.

Kentucky for McCain, Vermont for Obama.
West Virginia for McCain, according to Fox projection. That’s good, but no cause for big excitement.
Ditto South Carolina.

Exits ...5:54 pm
Drudge is breaking with Exit Poll data that looks bad for McCain: but of-course exit polls were going to look bad for McCain. Means nothing at this point. Trust no one — just vote.
…
Gawker’s exit poll data shows much closer margins barely favoring Obama, which would be quite good news for McCain, as we assume they are skewed Democrat anyway. Who is right? Who cares? Wait for real results, but don’t wait to vote.

Fed judge orders that Virginia military ballots are not to be discarded ...5:31 pm
The McCain campaign says in a lawsuit that absentee ballots weren’t mailed on time to many military members serving overseas. The complaint asks the court to order the state to count absentee ballots from overseas troops postmarked by Tuesday and received by Nov. 14.
The deadline for ballots to be received is 7 p.m. on Election Day.
U.S. District Judge Richard Williams said Tuesday that he will hear the lawsuit on Nov. 10. He ordered election officials to keep the late-arriving ballots until then.

As in “blogging under the influence.” Just in the interest of full disclosure: A cold I’ve been fighting got considerably worse yesterday, and I’ve been popping pills all day to keep functioning. Now that evening has arrived, I’m plumping for the “hot toddy” treatment. If things get a little incoherent around here, you readers have been warned, but I will of-course endeavor to keep my usual impeccably even keel.
Geraghty says: Anecdotal evidence of Republican turn-out is very good.
PS: Mrs RWB just voted at our NYC polling place, and she was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Again, curious, but perhaps nothing more.

Media figures will begin receiving exit poll data at 5 pm. But, of-course, none of them along the line know what any of it is worth.

Nothing to do with the election, but something that deserves note on any day, and perhaps especially today. By Keith Pavlischek: Colonel John W. Ripley, USMC, RIP.
